Lesson Twenty-Nine R n B Grooves

Lesson Notes

In this series of exercises, we'll look at playing R n' B grooves.

Hi-hat play may be awkward at the start since we'll be playing them unevenly. The hi-hats will be played with a mixture of quarter notes, 8th notes and 16th notes.

Don't be discouraged, if this a bit challenging. Over time, and with practice, you'll have this skill in the bag.

Exercise One

For the first exercise, we'll play the hi-hats with a mixture of quarter, 8th, and 16th notes. This will happen with every exercise in this lesson with the exception of exercise 5. It will be important to count out the play until you have the feel.

The snare will be played on counts "4" and the last "A".

The bass drum is played on "1", the first "A", and "3".

Exercise Two

Exercise two adds a bit of interest by leaving out hi-hat play on the first count. Again, a mixture of notes are played for the remainder of the bar on the hi-hats.

The snare drum is played on "2" and "4".

The bass drum is played on "1", the first "A", "3", and the third "+".
