Lesson Twenty-Eight – Trip Hop Grooves

In this series of exercises, we'll take a look at playing trip hop grooves.

We'll play four 2 bar phrases with plenty of off beat snare drum play.

In exercise 1 and 2, we'll be playing eighth notes on the hi-hats and in exercises 3 and 4, we'll play quarter notes using the shoulder of the stick.

Exercise One

In exercise one, we'll play 8th notes on the hi-hats with accents. In the first bar, the accents will fall on "+", "2", and "4". In the second bar, the accents are played on "+" and "2".

In the first bar, the snare is played along with the hi-hat accents on "+", "2", and "4". For the second bar, the snare is played on "+", "2", and the last "E".

The bass drum falls on "1", the second "A", and the second "+" in the first bar. In the second bar, the bass drum falls on "1", and the second and third "A".

Exercise Two

For exercise two, we'll continue playing 8th notes on the hi-hats. Accents are played on "2" and "4" for the first bar. In the second bar, the accents are played on "2" and the last "+".

In the first bar, the snare is played on "2", "3" and the last "E". In the second bar, the snare is played on "2" and the last "+".

The bass drum is played in the first bar on "1" and the third "+". For the second bar, the bass drum is played on "1", and the third and last "E".

Exercise Three

For exercise three, we'll play quarter notes on the hi-hats with the shoulder of the stick. Accents are played in the first bar, on "2", and in the second bar, on "2" and "4".

The bass drum is played in the first bar on "1" and the second "A". For the second bar, the bass drum is played on "1", the second "A", the third "A", and the last "+".

In exercise four, we'll again play quarter notes on the hi-hats using the shoulder of the stick. For both bars, the accents played on the hi-hats fall on "2" and "4".

The snare drum is played, in the first bar, on "2", "4", and the last "A". In the second bar, the snare is played on "2", the second "A", "4", the last "+" and the last "A".

Watch out, cause here comes the bass drum...

In the first bar, the bass drum falls on "1", the first "+", the second "E" and "A", and the third "+". For the second bar, the bass drum is played on "1", the first "+", the second "E", and the third "+".
