Lesson Thirty – House Grooves for Drummers

Lesson Notes

In this series of exercises, we'll look at playing house grooves.

House grooves generally have even hi-hats. These are played either as quarter notes, eighth notes, or just on the "+'s". The snare drum will be playing groups of three in these exercises.

We'll play each of these exercises eight times.

Exercise One

In exercvise one, we'll play the bass drum on "1", "2", "3", and "4". The hi-hat will be played on the "+'s". The snare drum is scattered throughout the groove.

Exercise Two

We'll play a similar beat for exercise two, but we'll at a cross-stick with the snare drum to mix things up a bit.

Exercise Three

For exercise three, we'll let the snare drum loose. The basic play for the bass drum and the hi-hat will stay the same, but the snare drum is "getting wild" in this one.
