Lesson Eight – Drum Rudiments Single Strokes

Lesson Notes

In this lesson, we'll look at playing a drum rudiment called "single strokes".

Single strokes are played "hand to hand", meaning we'll be playing "R L R L R L".

But, we'll also need to practice playing with the left hand leading as well.

In these exercises, we'll be playing 16th notes, but we will change up the note or notes that we accent.

We'll also keep time with a steady hi-hat ostinato.

Exercise One

For the first exercise, we'll just play straight 16th notes without any accents.

Exercise Two

In exercise two, we'll alternate accents while playing the 16th notes. First, we'll accent the 16th notes on the right hand. Then, we'll accent all of the notes on the left hand.

Exercise Three

In exercise three, we'll place the accents on the second and fourth groupings of 4 notes.

Exercise Four

In exercise four, we'll play the accents on each third note, starting with an accent on the first. This will result in a triplet pattern.
