Lesson One – Basic Groove 4/4

Lesson Notes

In this lesson, we look at a basic 4/4 groove. Concentrate on keeping the hi-hats even while playing 8th notes.

Listen for the "unisons" that happen between the hi-hats and the snare drum as well as the hi-hats and the bass drum.

When playing the snare drum on the "2" and "4", try to accent the note by snapping the stick with the wrist and the fingers.

Exercise One

In the first exercise, play the 8th notes on the high hat, counting "1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +". The snare drum is played on notes, "2" and "4". The bass drum is played on "1" and "3".
