Lesson Ten – Drum Rudiment Double Strokes

Lesson Notes

In this lesson, we'll look at playing double strokes. This differs from single strokes, since we'll be playing double notes with each hand.

Instead of alternating "R L R L", we'll be playing "R R L L". We'll need to focus on keeping a nice and even temp here.

Like in the lesson on single stroke rudiments, we'll play a hi-hat ostinato on the quarter notes.

Our objective is to aim for speed, eventually. At the start however, you may need to start slowly.

Over time, you should be able to play this pattern with control over the dynamics and accents.

Exercise One

For the first exercise, we'll play the 16th notes as double strokes with 2 notes played with the right hand, followed by 2 notes played with the left. Hold the drumstick between the forefinger and the thumb, allowing the backend of the stick to float within the remaining three fingers. With each stroke, pull up with those three fingers, allowing the stick to bounce upon impact.

In exercise two, we'll again play double strokes, but this time we'll place accents on the notes played with the right hand.
