Lesson Two – Hi-Hat Patterns

Lesson Notes

In this lesson, we'll play a basic groove with various hi-hat patterns.

We'll first play quarter notes using the "shoulder" of the stick.

Then, we'll play 8th notes like we did in lesson one.
We'll count the 8th notes as "1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +".

Then, we'll move on to 16th notes counting them as "1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a".

We'll next add a bit of variety by playing 16th notes "hand to hand" following a RLRLRLRL pattern.

For this lesson, the snare drum will always be on "2" and "4". The bass drum will always be on "1" and "3".

Exercise One

In the first exercise, play the quarter notes on the high hat. The snare drum is played on notes, "2" and "4". The bass drum is played on "1" and "3".

Exercise Four

In the fourth exercise, we'll play 16th notes again, but this time we'll use both hands. This means that the snare beats will land with your dominant hand.
